Our History

Birmingham Mind was formed in 1962 but in the early days the organisation was called The Birmingham Association for Mental Health (BAMH) and registered its services with the National Association for Mental Health. It’s first service was a residential home in the Handsworth area of Birmingham called Alpha House.

The organisation came into being as a result of a number of concerned individuals wanting to do something constructive in response to the declared closures of the large psychiatric hospitals announced by the then Health Minister.

In 1972 the National Association for Mental Health changed its name to Mind and as a consequence Mind in Birmingham was born.

Since then the Association has grown year upon year and now provides services across the city to over 700 service users and employs over 170 people.

In 2008 the organisation changed its name to Birmingham Mind with a view to the future when the organisation may consider providing services beyond Birmingham's city boundary.
